Coated Tongue
Question
Dear Doctor,
One of my neighbours has following ailment, and he is worried.
His tongue has a white coating now. It goes off when brushing but comes after several hours. This was there about 6 months ago but it vanished on its own, and has come back again.
(1) Is he having an ailment?
(2) Why do doctors see the tongue first? Can ailments be detected from the tongue?
Tks.

Answer
Hi vjratne1740,
Thank you for the question.
There are multiple diseases that can cause the symptom your neighbour has out of all that i think Candidiasis ( a fungal infection ) could be the reason. This occurs mostly in immuno-deficient states ( poor resistence to infections ). It is difficult to say obviously, without seeing the patient though.
There are many diseases that cause "signs" in the tongue. e.g pallor (pale ness) in low blood Haemoglobin, Dehydration, Increase in a compound called Bilirubin in liver diseases, to name a few.
Thanks and best regards
