Condom Use and STD

Male latex condoms can reduce your risk of getting an STD if used correctly. Be sure to use them every time you have sex. Female condoms aren't as effective as male condoms, but should be used when a man won't use a male condom.

Remember, though, that condoms aren't 100% safe and can't protect you from coming in contact with some sores, such as those that can occur with herpes, or warts, which can be caused by HPV infection.

Currently the condom usage in Sri Lanka is low. In Sri Lanka condoms have been promoted through the Maternal and child health programs focusing on family planning.

National HIV/AIDS Control Program plans to carry out behavioral surveys directed at high risk and vulnerable groups.

In Sri Lanka condoms are available through the network of STD clinics to clinic attendees. NGOs working with the National Program too are supplied with condoms through the national program or the closest STD clinic.

The Family planning Association of Sri Lanka markets its condoms through an island wide network of commercial outlets and through volunteers trained in condom promotion. National HIV/AIDS Control Program is currently strengthening its mechanism of condom promotion through a condom social marketing program for high risk and vulnerable groups.
