ESR
Question
Dear Doctor,
What do you mean by ESR?
What is the best ESR reading for a female of 65 years.
What is the cause of elevated ESR, say 200?
If ESR is high do they normally prescribe medications to bring it down?
Or do they treat some other suspected ailment (like joint pains) to bring down the ESR?
Please educate us readers about this subject of ESR, as almost all Drs order an ESR reading during a sickness.
Thanks.

Answer
Dear vjratne1740
Thank you for a very valuable question. You are right. We do ESR very frequently. It stands for Erythorcyte Sedementation Rate. This is a crude test of illness. What I mean is the ESR test is not specific for a particular disease but when elevated signifies that there is something wrong in the patient. There are certain diseases like bone and joint diseases that will cause very high ESRs. some more examples are tuberculosis and cancers.
ESR can be roughtly calculted for women by the formula (Age+10)รท2. Therefore upper limit of your patient should somewhere 35mm in 1st hour.
Thank you
