Chikungunya Prevention

What can people do to prevent becoming infected with chikungunya virus?
The best way to prevent chikungunya virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites. There is no vaccine or preventive drug currently available. Prevention tips are similar to those for other viral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, such as dengue or West Nile:

* Use insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 on exposed skin. Always follow the directions on the package.
* Wear long sleeves and pants (ideally treat clothes with permethrin or another repellent).
* Have secure screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
* Get rid of mosquito sources in your yard by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren't being used.
* Additionally, a person with chikungunya fever should limit their exposure to mosquito bites to avoid further spreading the infection. The person should use repellents when outdoors exposed to mosquito bites or stay indoors in areas with screens or under a mosquito net.

i am 45 years old, ever since i was small, i always sneeze and have wet nose. year2006 to 2007 i always had colds and sneezing and itchy nose and throat. i always breathed through the mouth and very seldom used my nose to breath as it was always clogged up. i visited a ent doctor and his findings was that i had sinusitis. he gave me Nasonex and to use it maybe life time was what he said. also my main problem thats why i visited my doctor was that i could not smell. after examination he said that i could not smell anymore because i had nerve degeneration because i the nerve used for smelling was not used for a long time. he said there is no medicine for this. i would like to know if this is true.

Thank you for the question.

What you have is "Rhinitis". There are broadly two types: allergic, and non-allergic. It appears that you have the variety where the rhinitis is perennial (throughout the year).

Good news is it is Treatable!

Both sinusitis and loss of smell (anosmia) can be due to rhinitis. Therefore if you can good control of it both problems should get sorted out.

Have you had a Nasal Endoscopic Examination?( a must investigation in your case)

Steroid spray should help you. Additionally antihistamines are also prescribed.

Generally you need long term treatment but I think if you take continuous treatment you can get your symptoms controlled.
