Thyroid function testing
Question
Thanks Doctors for providing this service free of charge.
My wife who is 48 years old, had repeated urinary tract infection. She consulted a urologist recently who ordered a scan and said everything is Ok so that he did not want to go for a cystoscopy as he suggested earlier. He wanted her to continue nitrofurontine for 3 months.
In the meantime she had a high cholesterol and has been asked to take astovastatin 20mg at nights. Some say she needs to check her tyroid (serum TSH). What is the relevance?
She feels short of breath at times and sweats a lot. When we all feel cold during rainy days she gets wet by sweatting. What could be the cause and what has to be done?
Answer
Dear User,
You are most welcome. Its our joy to keep this service both free and useful to all!
Thyroid function tests can be relevent in two ways in your wife's case.
1. Low thyroid hormone levels are associated with increased cholesterol.
2. Sweating can be due to many causes but high activity of the thyroid is one of them.
Therefore it seems a good idea to follow your physician's requests in further studies.
