Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception aims at preventing pregnancy after sex, which is why it is sometimes called "the morning after pill".

Emergency contraception makes it much less likely you will get pregnant. But emergency contraceptives are not as effective as birth control that's used before or during sex, like the pill or condoms.

So if you are sexually active or planning to be, don't use emergency contraception as your only protection against pregnancy.

Remeber emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, like HIV (only condoms do).

How can I prepare to ensure a healthy pregnancy?

In planning a pregnancy, it is very important to be in a satisfactory state of health before you become pregnant.
Because once the pregnancy test becomes positive and you become aware, the growing baby’s vital organs like the brain have already started to form.

This is why doctors advise the use of folic acid at least 3 months prior to planning a pregnancy. Because if you lacking in folate at the time of conception, the growth of the baby’s brain can be affected in an irreversible way.

Are you pregnant?

The gold standard is the pregnancy test. But even before you miss a period, you may suspect — or hope — that you're pregnant. Consider these early symptoms of pregnancy, which may begin in the first few weeks after conception.

Nausea and/ or vomiting: This is related to hormonal changes like rise in oestrogen.

Tender, swollen breasts
Your breasts may provide one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. As early as two weeks after conception, hormonal changes may make your breasts tender, tingly or sore. Or your breasts may feel fuller and heavier.
